Unsound's screeching ambience and raucous lullabies are made by connecting electronic sound gadgets in unnatural ways. The complexity of the ensemble's electronic setup amounts to a kind of programming. A network of feedback loops involving pitch-to-MIDI conversion behaves like an independent musician. In fact, the Machine tape series is recorded from the network without any human contributions.
Unsound has always emphasized live performance. Nothing is pre-recorded or sequenced. Most pieces that the ensemble performs are semi-composed-- A certain configuration of electronics is played using a predetermined structure for how the piece will evolve. Words, melodies, or sounds can be planned in advance, but the performers leave room for new ideas to enter the improvisation.
You can hear a good number of Unsound tracks on the Recordings pages.
